August 2025 bakery

A record of what has caught my attention and ideas I've been thinking about this month.

Half baked

Some written thoughts, but not enough for their own post.

This month I did a lot of career reflection. I have some things I want to work on to get to the next level like knowing when to do my A+ work and when C work is good enough. If you can't make that distinction, you'll burn out from always trying to go as hard as possible. Worse, your ceiling will be lower because you are constantly pushing and over-committed. It's just like overtraining for a race.

Art

This is lovely.

I can't believe I'm sharing a Jacob Collier clip. But here we are. Also I used to live about 200 ft from this spot.

Surprise album drop? Yes please.

Politics

This guy sucks.

Tyler does not suffer fools. He will expose you. You cannot doubt his rigor.

Ezra's best episode this month.

Best Know your Enemy episode this month.

President of Wesleyan University does a good job putting Harris's fixation with the danger of wokeness on campuses to bed.

My favorite If Books Could Kill episode this month.

AI Slop

This guy rules.

Man, I listened to this twice. That's how interesting I found it / how broken I am. I agreed with most of it, but of course push back on the bootcamp archetype they discuss. Software engineering is changing and this is a great conversation thinking through some of those changes.

The great developer speed-up, with Joel Becker of METR
Joel Becker from METR discusses how rigorous measurement of AI tools reveals a persistent gap between perceived productivity gains and objective reality.

A good intro to AI coding agents for the non coder.

Coinbase CEO gets Cursor for all his employees and fires anyone who doesn't use it after a week.

Nerdery

Logic, math, video games, computer science, we love this.

Video essay criticizing the productivity grind.

Perlin noise is an algorithm used to generate natural looking variance.

I started working on a new app for myself, inspired by this.

Great aesthetic and craft. Inspiration for my latest side project.

Good conversation. I forgive Nate Silver for 2016.

Defense, drones, and military procurement, with Bean of Naval Gazing
A pseudonymous defense industry expert explores the intellectual crossovers between military and civilian domains.

I love hearing about drones blowing things up.

How banks actually work (and don’t work)
Patrick reads his classic essay explaining why banks seem to have no memory of previous customer interactions despite being excellent at tracking money itself.

I love Patrick McKenzie's essays.

I enjoyed the discussion of Japanese culture, craft, and caring about things.

Career

Managers have no human rights

Damn this is good. "Managers, on the other hand, are always basically low-grade1 fighting each other, in the same way as countries always have conflicting interests, even if they maintain what looks like cordial relationships."

We are the only ones who see ourselves getting stuck all the time.
