October 2024 bakery

I've become persuaded by the idea that we are the product on most social media apps. The thoughts and links that I would have shared on these hellsites, I now aggregate in a monthly post I call the "Bakery."

Half baked

Some written thoughts, but not enough for their own post.

Dressing up

Many of you have commented on or been surprised when I show up on zoom wearing a collared shirt. I want to share my thoughts on why this dress habit works for me. Most personally, I always remember my paternal grandfather as a sharp dresser. The most dressed down I ever remember seeing him is in slacks and a collared shirt with the top button open. When he visited, a tie and sports coat were standard. My grandfather is the namesake of my son, Eddie. Famously, Steve Jobs wore the same outfit for some reason, much parodied at this point. I’m no silicon valley sage, but I admit to enjoying not having to think about what I’m going to wear. In a previous career I wore a tie to work for over ten years, so an unbuttoned oxford actually feels casual to me. I’m also just a little bit broken from the pandemic. Putting on my collared shirt reminds me that I’m not alone in my basement. Rather, I’m part of a team growing the GDP of the internet. It’s like a professional athlete suiting up for the game. LFG.

I'm experimenting with dumb-ifying my phone to make it less addictive. My latest changes are using a new minimal launcher and using Firefox + extensions and app time limits to handle youtube.
